RIM, Creators of the Blackberry, Lays off 2,000 employees

Earlier this week, TechCrunch announced that RIM, the creators of the Blackberry, instituted a “cost optimization program,” and is moving a number of executives into positions of greater power, laying off 2,000 of its estimated 19,000 person workforce in the process.

This move comes as no surprise in light of its’ recent failure in the tablet PC market with the Playbook. Lacking many features the Apple iPad possessed, the time, effort and energies invested into the Playbook by RIM’s R&D department put them back many steps in keeping ahead in creating bigger and better technological devices.
